Sinusitis, Mucous, Diet And Climate
Sinusitis is inflammation of the nasal sinuses: above the eyes (frontal), either side of the nose, inside the cheekbones (maxillary sinuses), behind the bridge of the nose (sphenoid sinuses), and in upper nose (ethmoid sinuses). The sinuses are air filled pockets that are connected to the nose and throat by passageways designed to drain away mucous. Excess mucous tends to clog the sinuses, increasing pressure while decreasing the breath through the nose. It is often caused by poor diet, climate, bacterial or viral infection, smoking, air pollution and or nasal deformity.
The sinuses in addition to the throat and nose are part of the lungs, respiration, according to traditional Chinese medicine. The lungs like a certain amount of moisture, mucous. Moisture, water facilitates the exchange of gases, oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs, blood and the environment. too much or too little water can weaken the exchange, respiration producing the following symptoms: mucous, phlegm, coughing, shortness of breath, asthma, sore throat, sinusitis, headaches, cough, earache, loss of sense of smell, etc.
Too much moisture, mucous in the lungs, sinuses can be caused by too many cooling, damp foods.
The lungs lie directly above the digestive organs. Digestion is an energetic, fiery process giving off excess heat, that warms the entire body, including the lungs. Digestive energy, heat naturally rises into the lungs, which it heats and dries. Weak digestion fails to the heat the lungs, causing them to cool and moisten, producing excess fluids: mucous, phlegm. Cold condenses. The cold temperatures of winter condense and harden air into water into snow into ice.
Excess water, mucous, phlegm, tends to clog the lungs, sinuses, throat, etc. producing coughing, inflammation, sinusitis, shortness of breath, etc.
Cold, damp foods, drinks (milk, yogurt, salads, raw vegetables, fruits specially tropical, juices, smoothies and cold drinks) in excess, and or at the beginning of the meal, tend to weaken, cool and dilute digestion, acid and enzymes, which in turn, weakens, cools and dilutes the lungs, sinuses, throat, etc.
Mucous and phlegm in the lungs, sinuses can also be a breeding ground for infection via bacteria, viruses, etc. and indirectly cause sinusitis, bronchitis, etc.
The best medicine for the lungs, sinuses is proper diet:
Per meal, 2-3 times per day, preferably breakfast and lunch
1/3 protein and fat (red meat, eggs, chicken, cheese, beans, etc.)
1/3 grain (rice, noodles, bread, etc.)
1/3 Vegetables, cooked (3-5), fruit (1)
Spices (cumin, coriander fennel, turmeric, cayenne, ginger, etc.) soup and or tea.
Cooked foods, soups, stews, protein and fat warm the body, lungs, digestive organs etc. Spices increase digestion and dry dampness, excess fluids: mucous, phlegm,. loose stools, edema, cellulite, etc.
Reduce milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, ice cream, salads, tropical fruits, smoothies, shakes and cold drinks
There are two types of sinusitis: acute and chronic. Acute sinusitis is generally caused by bacterial or viral infection, like the common cold. Chronic sinusitis can be caused by small growths, injury to the nasal bones, smoking, air pollution, allergies (hay fever), etc.
