An Introduction To The Different Types Of Yoga
Originally used in southern India as a way of achieving a higher state of consciousness, yoga is now accepted by the masses as a form of meditating, exercise and relaxation.
But there are dozens of types of yoga suitable for different people and different purposes. Which is right for you? This article examines some of the most common types of yoga out there.
- Hatha Yoga - the original style of yoga. In the West, this term is used to collectively describe the 12 or so yoga styles practiced.
- Iyengar Yoga - brought to light 65 years ago by yoga master BKS Iyengar, this yoga style is very scientific, placing a strong emphasis on posture due to the belief that the skeletal system can bring alignment to the whole body. Iyengar yoga uses props such as belts, blankets and bricks to assist people with mastering poses.
- Ashtanga Yoga - first taught around 60 years ago and based on the teachings of Sri K Pattabhi Jois this type of yoga features challenging workout routines. This style seems to be the favoured yoga of the 21st century, and it’s keywords are strength, stamina and sweat. The style combines dynamic breathing with fast, flowing movements and is therefore best suited to people with a fair level of athletic ability.
- Bikram Yoga - this style involves heating the room to between 90-105 degrees. The student must then sweat their way through the 26 classical hatha yoga. This style focuses on the physical workout with little discussion about the spiritual side of yoga.
- Kundalini Yoga - one of the styles that allows increased flexibility, energy, serenity and personal empowerment without causing stress. This style often uses chants as well as yoga postures to achieve the channelling and release of Kundalini energy; the energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine and is guided through the body’s major energy centres.
- Kripalu Yoga - a more meditative form of yoga, this style aims to encourage insight and awareness of the self. Although not as dynamic as some other yoga styles, this style does work as deeply on both the mental and physical levels. It is a popular style in America.
- Viniyoga Yoga - a gentle style that integrates movement, breathing and awareness in order to improve both mental and physical health. This style is often delivered in one-to-one sessions as it is based around the belief that yoga should be tailored to each individual.
- Sivananda Yoga - one of the better known styles in the West, this style is based on the teachings of Swami Sivananda, who trained as a western doctor and then dedicated his life to promoting the benefits of yoga. This style promotes a five point plan to health and happiness; proper exercise, breathing, relaxation, positive thinking and meditation.
- Integral Yoga - a gentle yoga style first introduced in the 1960s, this style combines hatha yoga, prayer and meditation.
